The Dove Workshop for Girls

Why do we need a Workshop?

Self-esteem has become a national crisis in this country. Recent studies prove that 70% of girls feel they do not measure up in some way based upon their outward appearance, performance in school, and personal relationships. Most disturbing is that girls with low self-esteem are engaging in harmful and destructive behaviours that can leave a lasting imprint on their lives.

What does Dove and Metamorphosis, Inc.

 hope to accomplish?

The Dove Self-Esteem Fund is part of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and was established as an agent of change to inspire and educate girls and young women about a wider definition of beauty, with a goal of reaching 5 million girls globally by 2010 with self-esteem programming. The Dove Self-Esteem Fund supports the Boys and Girls Club of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA to help build confidence in girls 8-17 with after-school programs, self-esteem building events and educational resources. Dove Self-Esteem Workshop for girls are designed to empower girls and promote new ways of thinking about beauty, body image and self-esteem with positive self-esteem building discussions and activities.

BodyWorks, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, focuses on helping girls ages 9 to 13 and their families create healthier lifestyles.

What is its purpose?

  • To provide parents/caregivers with tools & strategies to improve family eating and activity habits.
  • To support adolescent girls in reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.
  • To prevent obesity among adolescent girls.

How does it work?

A large share of adolescent girls have poor eating habits and do not get the recommended daily amount of physical activity.  In developing the BodyWorks program, the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) found that many girls skip breakfast, have non-nutritious lunches and don’t eat dinner with their families.  Girls spend about three hours a day watching television, playing video games, using the computer, and talking on the telephone, without parental limitations.

Overall, girls expressed a desire to have their parents be stronger role models for fitness.  They wanted their parents to set boundaries for unhealthy eating habits and sedentary activities, and to engage the entire family in increasing physical activity.

The BodyWorks program, therefore, focuses on parents as role models and provides them with the tools and support they need to create healthy lifestyles for their children.  Parents who enroll in  the BodyWorks program will receive a BodyWorks toolkit and will attend regular group meetings to help maintain behavior change.  The toolkit serves as a guide to creating an overall health lifestyle.  It includes a video on healthy shopping and cooking strategies, a recipe book, food and fitness journals, a weekly meal planner refrigerator magnet and more.
